MALAYSIA

Repeating their heroics of 2010 when they were crowned ASEAN champions for the first time was always going to be tough for Malaysia and so it proved two years ago.

They had the roughest of starts, a 3-0 battering at home by Singapore. However, the titleholders picked themselves up to beat Laos 4-1 and Indonesia 2-0 and finish runners-up in the group.

The first leg of the semi-final against Thailand was a classic with both teams playing fast-paced, attacking football that electrified the sell-out 80,000 crowd at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

Forced to play as a lone striker in the absence of the injured Safee Sali, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha broke the deadlock early in the second half with Teerasil Dangda heading home the equaliser 11 minutes from time.

With an away goal in the bag, Thailand were favourites to win the return leg and the dismissal of defender Fadhli Shas made the task even harder for Malaysia and they relinquised their crown after conceding two second half goals.

Malaysia chose not to renew the contract of 2010 winning coach K. Rajagobal at the end of last year after a patchy Asian Cup qualifying campaign and Ong Kim Swee, who runs the under-23 team, was named interim manager.

In June, the Football Association of Malaysia announced that former national team player Dollah Salleh would take charge of Harimau Malaya at the AFF Suzuki Cup. The coach has enjoyed successful stints with Selangor, Pahang and, latterly, PDRM.

Tournament Record: Champions in 2010; runners-up in 1996
Nickname: Harimau Malaya (Malayan Tiger)
National coach: Dollah Salleh (Malaysia)
