MYANMAR

Myanmar were the dominant side in South East-Asia in the 1960s and 1970s but have under-achieved in recent times.

In their heyday, Myanmar were runners-up in the 1968 Asian Cup, won the football gold medal at the Asian Games in 1966 and 1970 and beat all comers at the South East Asian Games on five successive occasions from 1965.

Their poor performances in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup were particularly damaging as they resulted in them losing their seeding for the tournament.

They navigated qualifying for the 2012 tournament with relative ease, topping the group after victories over Brunei DS (1-0), Timor Leste (2-1), Cambodia (3-0) and a 0-0 draw with Laos.

However, the tournament proper was a different story and they failed to win a match in Group A. They drew their opener with Vietnam before losing 4-0 to Thailand and 2-0 to the Philippines.

Myanmar pulled off a bit of coup in February when Radojko “Raddy” Avramovic, who steered Singapore to three of their four AFF Suzuki Cup crowns, was unveiled as their new coach.

He led his new charges into the AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives in May and they produced a mixed bag of results, beating the hosts 3-2 in the opener before losing to eventual champions Palestine (2-0) and Kyrgyzstan (1-0) to miss out on a spot in the last four.

Avramovic will be looking for more consistency in the qualifying tournament for the AFF Suzuki Cup in October as Myanmar look to keep alive their record of having appeared in every finals.

Tournament Record: Played in every tournament, best finish fourth in 2004
