PHILIPPINES

The Philippines continued their upward spiral in ASEAN football with a second successive appearance in the semi-finals of the AFF Suzuki Cup two years ago.

Their performances and rise up the rankings saw them discard the "fairytale" tag and take on the mantle of “favourites”.

A narrow 2-1 loss to group hosts Thailand served as a warning that the Philippines meant business and they qualified for the knock-out stages with a dramatic 1-0 win over 2008 champions Vietnam and a 2-0 victory against Myanmar.

In 2012, the Azkals were forced to forfeit home advantage in their semi-final with Indonesia as there was no suitable venue in the country but the ASEAN Football Federation gave the green light for the 2012 last-four clash between the Philippines and Singapore to be staged at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

Home fans flocked to the stadium only to witness their heroes struck by stage fright at performing in front of their own supporters for the first time in the AFF Suzuki Cup and they were grateful to Eduard Sacapano for some inspired goalkeeping that kept The Lions at bay.

The return leg was also a tight affair with the teams separated by a strike from Khairul Amri.

Thomas Dooley, the former captain of the United States national team, took over as head coach of the Azkals from Michael Weiss earlier this year and steered them to runner-up spot in May's AFC Challenge Cup.

Being so close to a spot in the AFC Asian Cup in Australia next January will have motivated the Philippines as they look to impress once more on the ASEAN stage.
