SINGAPORE

Singapore roared back from failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup by winning the title for a record fourth time two years ago.

The victory was a fitting denouement for long-serving coach Radojko Avramovic who announced he was leaving his post after guiding Singapore to three of their four successes in the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Singapore won the right to call themselves “ASEAN’s best” with a 3-2 (3-1, 0-1) aggregate victory over Thailand.

The 3-1 home win in the first leg at a rocking Jalan Besar Stadium virtually sealed the title for Singapore with goals coming from Fahrudin Mustafic, Khairul Amri and central defender Baihakki Khaizan.

Thailand launched wave after wave of attacks in the return leg but were profligate in front of goal. Kirati Keawsombat did score just before the interval, however Singapore defended stoutly in the second half to lift the glittering prize.

They reached the final with a 1-0 aggregate win over the Philippines in the last four, Khairul Amri scoring the only goal of the two-legged affair in Singapore.

Singapore had started their campaign brightly with a 3-0 win over defending champions Malaysia only to put pressure on themselves with a 1-0 loss to Indonesia in their second match.

The Lions were made to sweat by Laos in their final group game, falling behind by two goals in the first half before hot-shot Shahril Ishak restored parity with goals either side of half-time. Normal service was resumed with Khairul Amri and Fazrul Nawaz giving Singapore a 4-2 lead after 66 minutes before Laos made the final stages interesting by grabbing a third in the 81st minute.
