TIMOR LESTE

The newest national team in Southeast Asia, Timor Leste are beginning to live up to their nickname O Sol Nascente (The Rising Sun) and created a bit of AFF Suzuki Cup history two years ago with their first wins in the tournament.

In the qualifying event, Timor Leste thumped Cambodia 5-1 to record their first ever victory in 16 games and then defeated Laos 3-1 to edge towards qualification.

A narrow 2-1 loss to hosts Myanmar and a defeat to Brunei DS by the same scoreline in their final match, when they only needed a point to progress, saw them fall short.

Playing with flair under Brazilian coach Emerson Alcantara, Timor Leste topped the scoring charts with 10 goals with Murilo de Almeida, Adelino Trindade and Alan Leandro making their mark with three apiece.

While Timor Leste left a lasting impression and built a solid foundation at the qualifying tournament in 2012, the team's progress is still restricted by a lack of infrastructure and exposure to competitive football.

Tournament record: Played in the group stages just once in 2004
Nickname: O Sol Nascente (The Rising Sun)
National coach: Antonio Vieira (Brazil)
