VIETNAM

Vietnam had a campaign to forget at the AFF Suzuki Cup two years ago as their forward line misfired badly and the team failed to make the knockout stages for just the second time.

The side was a pale shadow of the triumphant 2008 outfit that swept all before them to win the AFF Suzuki Cup for the first time and spark frenzied scenes of celebration in the football-mad country.

A 1-1 draw with Myanmar in the opening match of Group A was as good as it got for Vietnam with the Philippines edging past them 1-0 and hosts Thailand running out 3-1 winners.

The highly rated Phan Thanh Hung took responsibility for the failure to qualify from the group and resigned as coach.

Japan's Toshiya Miura, who has coached a number of J.League teams, is now in the hot seat and is confident that he is up to the challenge of turning round the national team.

Vietnam ushered in the new era under Miura with a 6-0 victory over Myanmar last month, striker Le Cong Vinh signaling a welcome return to form with a hat-trick.

However, there will still be huge pressure on the players as they have to perform in front of their own fans at the My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi during the group stage of this year's AFF Suzuki Cup but they will take inspiration from the fact that they are back at the scene of the country's finest footballing moment, victory in the 2008 tournament.

Tournament record: Winners in 2008; Runners up in 1998
Nickname: Doi Tuyen Vietnam (Team representing Vietnam)
National coach: Toshiya Miura (Japan)
