About Singapore

Four-time champions Singapore will be hoping to revive their fortunes in this year’s AFF Suzuki Cup after bowing out at the Group stages in 2014 and 2016.

In the last edition of the tournament, Singapore was grouped with Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines in what was termed the “Group of Death”.  Singapore started their campaign with a goalless draw against hosts Philippines, but lost 1-0 to Thailand. In the final Group stage match against Indonesia, two goals from the Garudas cancelled out striker Khairul Amri’s overhead-kick goal.

The island republic have regularly punched above their weight in the regional competition, overcoming Vietnam in 1998, Indonesia in 2004 and Thailand and 2007 and 2012 to become the first team to be crowned ASEAN champions on four occasions.

Serbian coach Radojko Avramovic led the team to the title in 2004, 2007 and 2012 as well as a credible third place finish in 2008.

Singapore co-hosted the 2014, but failed to retain their 2012 title. The Lions were eventually knocked out by causeway rivals Malaysia in their final Group stage match.
