A spot in the final was sealed by a pair of 1-0 wins over The Philippines - the bustling Cristian Gonzales scoring both goals - before Indonesia were brought crashing back to earth by a 3-0 loss to Malaysia in the first leg of the showdown.
Indonesia went for the jugular in the return but an early missed penalty and an opportunistic strike by Safee Sali ultimately sealed their fate although the tournament co-hosts did win the second leg.
In the aftermath of the final loss, selection problems meant weakened sides contesting some qualifying matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup with the result that Indonesia shipped 26 goals and scored just three as they finished bottom of Group E, consisting Iran, Qatar and Bahrain, with no points.
Nil Maizar, a former Indonesian international, was appointed as head coach a few months ago and tasked with turning around the fortunes of the Merah Putih. His new-look side drew 2-2 with The Philippines in Manila last month.
Nickname(s): Merah Putih (The Reds and Whites), Garuda (The Eagle)
National coach: Nil Maizar (Indonesia)
