Although they went on to lose heavily to Indonesia and Malaysia, the showing against Thailand indicated the progress made by the national team.
Laos squeezed into the finals on goal difference after they had finished the qualifiers tied on five points with The Philippines and Cambodia. A 6-1 thrashing of Timor Leste in their final game saw them edge out The Philippines for top spot by virtue of scoring one more goal.
Laos have competed sparingly since AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 but did beat old rivals Cambodia in the first round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup before bowing out to China.
