The newest team in Southeast Asia, Timor Leste are still finding their feet at international level. They have yet to win a game in the AFF Suzuki Cup, a 0-0 draw with Cambodia in the 2008 qualifying competition being their best result so far. A lack of infrastructure and exposure to competitive football has restricted their progress but they play the game with passion and learn from every encounter.

The qualifying competition two years ago was certainly a learning experience with Timor Leste losing to The Philippines (5-0), Cambodia (4-2) and Laos (6-1). In the final game, the home crowd was momentarily silenced when Chiquito fired Timor Leste into a surprise lead with a stunning ninth minute opener before Laos responded with six goals.

A squad of 27 players has started training under Brazilian coach Boiadeiro ahead of the 2012 qualifying tournament in Myanmar from October 5 to 13.
