In their one appearance in the group stages in 1996, Brunei scraped a 1-0 win over The Philippines but suffered heavy defeats at the hands of Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Their footballing highlight came in 1999 when, against all the odds, they lifted the Malaysia Cup.
The country’s national under-21 team impressed earlier this year beating Indonesia 2-0 in the final of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) to win the title for the first time. As a result, the youngsters from this team could form the foundation of the squad for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 qualifying tournament.
