THAILAND

Thailand rose from the ashes of a disastrous campaign in 2010 to come within a goal of winning the AFF Suzuki Cup two years ago.

Under Winfried Schafer, the German who famously led Cameroon to victory in the 2002 African Cup of Nations, they played with a purpose that was sadly missing in 2010 and topped their group with wins over the Philippines (2-1), Myanmar (4-0) and Vietnam (3-1).

A 1-1 away draw followed by a 2-0 victory saw off defending champions Malaysia in the semi-finals and Thailand entered the final against Singapore as slight favourites.

Thailand appeared strangely lacklustre in the first leg which they lost 3-1 and veteran midfielder Datsakorn Thonglao admitted later that several players on yellow cards, including himself, had played a cautious game for fear of missing the second leg through suspension.

Indeed, Thailand were far more attack-minded in the second leg knowing that a 2-0 victory would seal the title. Kirati Keawsombat did score just before the interval, however Singapore defended well in the second half to deny them a fourth ASEAN crown. Shortly after the loss, Schafer and Thailand parted company.

The talismanic Kiatisuk "Zico" Senamuang, the most successful footballer of his generation with more than 100 appearances for the national team and scorer of over 65 goals, will lead the three-time winners into the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup, a tournament he won three times as a player.

Kiatisuk officially took over the reins after leading the under-23 side to the SEA Games title last December, breaking a six-year win drought in the process, and he will be wanting to achieve a similar feat with the senior team in the AFF Suzuki Cup which they last won in 2002.

National coach: Kiatisuk "Zico" Senamuang (Thailand)
