Azkals name squad for US training camp

Philippines, eager to back-up their sensational run to the semi-finals of the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, have announced a largely locally based squad for their training camp in the United States.

As expected, the influential sibling duo of Phil and James Younghusband and players competing in overseas leagues are missing from the 24-man squad.

Aly Borromeo, Emelio Caligdong, Jason de Jong, Roel Gener, Robert Gier, Chris Greatwich and Ian Araneta, who became household names in the Philippines during the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, will make the trip.

The Philippines are scheduled to meet Chicago Inferno from the USL Premier Development League on August 11 before playing the US Virgin Islands national side six days later, as part of the camp.

The Younghusband brothers - both regulars in the national team with Phil the top goalscorer at this year’s AFC Challenge Cup with six strikes - will miss the training stint from August 8-25 because of other engagements.

“Due to our previous commitments we have informed the Philippine Football Federation that we have declined to attend the US training camp,” said Phil.

“But our commitment to the Philippine team remains very strong and will be for all major competitions of the Azkals.”

The Philippines have been drawn in Group A of the AFF Suzuki Cup and will meet three-time champions Thailand, 2008 winners Vietnam and the top team from the qualifying tournament.
