Coaches spring surprises with initial squads

23-Oct-2012
Defending champions Malaysia, 2010 runners up Indonesia and three-time winners Thailand have announced their preliminary squads for the AFF Suzuki Cup in November.

Malaysia coach K. Rajagobal has kept faith with many of the players that featured in the winning side two years ago including tournament top scorer Safee Sali, fellow striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, midfielders S. Kunanlan and Safiq Rahim and goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi.

But there is no place for Kelantan captain Badhri Radzi who led his side to the Malaysia Super League title and triumphs in the Malaysia Cup and Malaysia FA Cup this season.

Indonesia, who have yet to win the AFF Suzuki Cup, have included the iconic Bambang Pamungkas and former captain Firman Utina in their initial squad of 35 players.

Veteran Bambang, who scored two penalties in Indonesia’s 2-1 victory over Thailand at the group stage in 2010, has grabbed a total of 12 goals in the Asean Football Championship.

The Indonesians have also looked overseas for talent, naming four players attached to Belgian club C.S. Vise in the preliminary squad – Syamsir Alam, Yandi Sofyan, Alfin Tuasalamony and Yericho Christiantoko.

They have included two naturalised players in Stefano Lilipaly and Jhon van Beukering.

Thailand coach Winfried Schafer sprung a few surprises with his initial choices, leaving out midfielder Suchao Nutnum, wing back Suree Sukha and mercurial strikers Teerathep “Leesaw” Winothai and Sarayoot “Joe Five Yards” Chaikamdee.

Suchao and Suree have been regular features in the Thailand team in recent years while Sarayoot scored the equalising goal against Laos in the dying minutes of their group encounter at the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup.

Schafer has not restricted his squad to players competing in the Thai Premier League with Prahyat Bunya and Attapong Nooprom turning out for Thai League Cup finalists Ratchaburi in Division 1.
