Indonesia cancel friendly with Vietnam

Indonesia have pulled out of their AFF Suzuki Cup warm-up match with Vietnam just days after the teams drew 0-0 in Surabaya.

The return match between the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup runners-up and the 2008 champions was scheduled for Hanoi on Saturday (September 22).

"The Indonesian football federation has asked to move the match to another day, saying that they met with difficulties related to personnel and some other problems, and we must accept that," Ngo Le Bang, general secretary of the Vietnam Football Federation told local media.

"We will discuss the possibility of holding the match on October 16 with them, but many things must be done to ensure the plan.”

Several Indonesia players had earlier pulled out of the proposed trip citing family and injury problems leaving coach Nil Maizer short-handed up front.

Vietnam coach Phan Thanh Hung said the cancellation would affect the team’s preparation for November's AFF Suzuki Cup after their morale-boosting 2-0 win over reigning champions Malaysia and the draw with Indonesia.

"It is a pity that we will miss a chance to practice," he said. "It is clear that Indonesia face some challenges to miss an international friendly.

"The match was considered a test for us to review ourselves. Hopefully they will commit to a game in October."
