About Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste enter the tournament as underdogs but also with great pride at having put their young nation on the regional map.

The last time they made it to the finals was back in 2004 when they were still the world’s youngest nation but despite some spirited performances they ultimately finished bottom of their group without a win on the board.

They did come mighty close though as it took the Philippines scoring a pair of second half stoppage-time goals to pip them 2-1 in the penultimate match.

The aim now, almost a decade and a half later, is to secure that breakthrough win and if the impressive manner in which they achieved qualification is anything to go by they’re in with a real shout of doing so.

With their home stadium in Dili not yet ready to host international matches the first fixture in the two-legged tie was played in Malaysia where a brace from star forward Henrique helped secure a 3-1 win.

A 1-0 loss in the return leg a week later was still enough for the youthful side to progress 3-2 on aggregate and in the celebrations post-match you could see just what it meant for the side to have reached the finals.

Vastly experienced Japanese coach Norio Tsukitate was only appointed earlier this year but already he’s put his stamp on the team, having them well organised defensively and allowed to express themselves in attack and it’s that mix that could see them spring a few surprises when the Group Stage gets underway in November.
